II. Equipping Deacons for Urban Congregations: Critical Issues
A. The kind of deacons we need
1. Urban churches need deacons who possess proven experience of spiritual depth and commitment as faithful servants of Jesus.

d. Leadership must be defined in terms of sacrifice and suffering, not in terms of power and personal achievement, 2 Cor. 11.23-27.
2. Urban churches need deacons who can provide godly compassionate service and care to the members of the body.
a. In practical ministry to the needs of those who are neglected and hurting
(1) Urban fellowships have a host of practical needs which servants can meet if they follow through on the Lord’s assignment, 1 Cor. 3.5. (2) A deacon is a co-worker with God in meeting the real needs of people in their life context (cf. 1 Thess. 3.2 where “deacon” is translated “God’s coworker”).
