D. The elder is a representative , 1 Pet. 5.1-3.
The elder is one who represents the interests of the Lord and of the Church, serving as an agent on behalf of the community and the faith to which God has called them.
2
1. Elders do not exercise their authority arbitrarily; they are to be obeyed and submitted to because God has placed them in a position to guard and care for his flock (cf. Acts 20.28).
2. This does not mean that elders are to be given unqualified obedience; saints have the duty and privilege to weigh all things against God’s biblical standard, and follow accordingly.
3. The attitude toward elders should, therefore, be of supreme esteem; love and respect for their important work among the members of the body.
a. 1 Thess. 5.12-13
b. Heb. 13.7
c. Heb. 13.17
