II. Equipping Elders for Urban Congregations

Beloved, we know that the bishop and all the clergy should be an example in all good works to the people. ~ Malchion (c. 270, E), 5.379., Ibid., p. 160.

A. Traditional forms of equipping elders

In many settings, selection for the position of elder is not based on maturity and spiritual power, but rather on social place and prominence in the business and/or secular community.

1. Persons of prominence in business and community (“successful people”)

2. Well known or influential people within the corridors of power in our city

2

3. Academically credentialed persons (i.e., those who have been formally prepared within a college, seminary, or other kind of accredited institution)

4. While none of these things are a problem for a selection criteria, in the end they ought not determine what it means to be a leader in the Church: sharing in the death of Christ so one can be free to serve others, 2 Cor. 4.7-12.

a. Leaders are bondslaves of Jesus Christ .

b. Leaders are servants for the well-being of the members of the Church.

c. Leaders die to themselves in order that the life of Christ might be poured into others!
