God as Father: The Goodness of God

Segment 2: Moral Qualities of Severity

Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis

An understanding of the wrath of God , a moral attribute usually associated with God’s severity and not his goodness, is absolutely essential for anyone claiming to communicate a fully biblical picture of God the Father Almighty. As a central doctrine of Scripture, we must strive to understand God’s wrath in connection to his goodness, which can only be accomplished by a close examination of the relationship between God’s goodness and his severity. While we may struggle with understanding their relationship, there has never been or never will be any confusion or conflict within God. He is and will forever be the one true God, always acting everywhere with love and justice, in grace and truth. Our objective for this segment, Moral Qualities of Severity , is to enable you to see that: • The wrath of God the Father Almighty is a central doctrine of the Holy Scriptures, and a key dimension of God’s revelation to us concerning his person. • The wrath of God, as a moral quality usually associated with God’s severity and not his goodness, must be examined in conjunction to God’s goodness. Love and justice must be comprehended together. • Any apparent tensions we might perceive between God’s holiness and his love are not real conflicts but merely difficulties in our understanding of God’s perfect attributes and his single nature as God. • In God’s own mind and character, there has not been nor will there ever be any confusion or conflict between himself or his attributes. • Everywhere God acts and works, he is and will forever be the one true God, always acting everywhere in perfect harmony with his love and his justice, his grace and his truth.
