Prolegomena The Doctrine of God and the Advance of the Kingdom
Welcome to the Mentor’s Guide for Lesson 1, Prolegomena: The Doctrine of God and the Advance of the Kingdom . The overall focus of the God the Father module is to help your students come to grips with the critical ideas associated with the doctrine of God, and specifically the doctrine of God the Father Almighty. The intent of this study is not academic primarily, but to encourage your students to seek the Lord according to the truth of the Scriptures. Please try throughout this module to distinguish between knowledge about God, and the knowledge of the Lord by faith in Jesus Christ. The academic study of the Lord has its place, but it can and should never supersede or overshadow the fact that the knowledge of Scripture is to so enrich the life of the seeker that they can walk with God, and then, through that walk, become a chosen vessel through whom the Lord can work. What a wonderful blessing it is to engage in rigorous intellectual study regarding the Lord and his person! This warning is not to suggest that we ought not love the Lord with all our mind (cf. Deut. 6.4-6), but simply to warn that knowledge puffs up but love builds up (1 Cor. 8.1). May the Lord bless you as you lead these students into an exciting adventure of pondering the infinite glory of our Lord God Almighty! Please pay careful attention to the “Lesson Objectives” within each lesson. In some ways, this is the most significant part of the pedagogy of the class time. The objectives shape and give meaning to all of the various activities, and focus attention during all of the sharing, study, discussion, and even times of prayer. Hopefully you will find that the objectives are clearly stated and accessible. These aims must shape all that you as a mentor do within the class time. Make certain that you emphasize these lesson aims throughout every phase of your discussions and presentations, and bring them to your student’s attentions during the quizzes, dialogues, debates, and your interactions with them. The more you can highlight the objectives throughout the class period, the better the chances are that they will understand and grasp the magnitude of these objectives.
