Segment 2: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

In the first segment we sought to show how the Spirit is the one who enables us to be spiritually reborn and placed into the family of God, through regeneration and adoption. In this second segment, we will speak about the biblical image of being “baptized into the Spirit of God” and the role that the Spirit plays in connecting believers to Christ and empowering them to minister in his name.

Summary of Segment 2

Our objective for this segment, The Baptism in the Holy Spirit, is to:

• Remind students that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is an important scriptural doctrine.

• Explain some key elements of the Spirit’s work in uniting us to Christ.

• Help students understand that Christians disagree about Spirit baptism including what it accomplishes, and when and how it happens. • Allow students to summarize the major views about Spirit baptism and see how each is defended from the Scriptures. • Help students to understand and defend their own position on Spirit baptism as well as understand and learn from the views of others.

We will continue to use the RABBIS acrostic to understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit as we discuss the first “B”– baptism in the Holy Spirit.
