b. Luke 19.41-42 – And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, [42] saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.”
7. The crowds mixed reaction to Jesus’ show of emotion, 11.36-37.
a. “See how he loved him!,” 11.36.
b. “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” , 11.37.
C. Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, 11.38-44.
1. Note John’s comment on Jesus’ emotional demeanor at the tomb: deeply moved again, 11.38.
2. Jesus’ command: Take away the stone , 11.39a.
a. A common grave configuration: a grave hollowed out of a rocky place or cave
b. Large boulder or fitted stone designated to block the entrance of the tomb
3. Martha’s concern: “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days,” 11.39.
a. Seeing with the natural eye, thinking with the natural mind
