3. The fear of the Council: Jesus unabated

a. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him , 11.48a.

b. The Romans will come and take away our place and our nation, 11.48b.

B. Caiaphas’s rebuke and prophesy, 11.49-53

1. You know nothing at all!: It is better that one man should die for the people not that the whole nation should perish, 11.50.

2. This was not of his own accord , but a prophetic utterance as high priest, 11.51a.

3. John’s interpretation of Caiaphas’s word: he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and for all the children of God scattered abroad, 11.51-52.

4. The Council from that day on made plans to kill Jesus, 11.53.

C. Jesus’ new strategy: no longer walking openly among the people, 11.54-57 ( authorities are on the lookout for Jesus to arrest him, and commence the process of executing him ).

A. Mary anoints the feet of Jesus at Bethany, 12.1-8.
