5. Judas’s response: A year’s wages has been wasted on this unnecessary act of whatever?! , 12.4.

a. John’s narration: he who was about to betray him (i.e. Jesus)

b. “Why was not this sold for 300 denarii , and given to the poor ?”, 11.5 (cf. a denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer).

c. Judas’s motive: no concern for the poor, but having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it!, 12.6.

6. Jesus’ response: She has anointed my body for burial; there will be ample opportunity to do right by the poor, but I will not much longer be with you, 12.8.

B. Killing off any proof: the plot to kill Lazarus, 12.9-11.

1. Crowd gathers not just for Jesus, but to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead, 12. 9

2. We are the trophies of God’s unique grace – he displays his power through us , Eph. 3.8-10 – To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, [9] and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, [10] so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
