2. Isaiah’s prophecies were in reference to him in his pre-existent glory.

C. Fear of the Pharisees interferes with public confession of Jesus, 12.42-43.

1. Many even of the authorities believed that Jesus was the Messiah, but did not confess him for fear of being put out of the synagogue, 12.42.

2. The reason: love for the glory from people MORE THAN the glory that comes from God, 12.43

a. Some disciples are referred to in John as “secret,” John 19.38.

b. Many of the leaders wanted the glory that came from their peers rather than God’s approval, cf. Luke 16.15 with John 5.41-44.

IX. Jesus’ Final Appeal to the People to Believe in Him as Messiah, 12.44-50

A. Jesus declares his intimate relationship with and representation of the Father, 12.44-45.

1. Whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me, 12.44.

2. Whoever sees me, sees him who sent me, 12.45.
