from Egyptian slavery. This commemoration by Jesus and his disciples represents his third celebration of the Passover in John (2.13; 6.4).

A. The principle of reversal acted out: Jesus washes the disciples’ feet, 13.1-11

1. The self-consciousness of Jesus at this final celebration of the Passover, 13.1

a. He knew that his hour had come to depart out of the world to the Father , 13.1a.

(1) Luke 22.53 – When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

(2) John 7.6 – Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.”

(3) John 7.30 – So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. (4) John 8.20 – These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

(5) John 12.23 – And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”

b. He loved his own who were in the world , 13.1b.

c. He loved them to the end , 13.1c.
