a. A consciousness of unworthiness

(1) Matt. 3.14 – John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” (2) Luke 5.8 – But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

(3) John 1.27 – even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.

b. Peter’s question: Lord, do you wash my feet? , 13.6; and Jesus’ rejoinder: You don’t understand now, but you will later, 13.7.

c. Peter’s insistence: You shall never wash my feet , 13.8a; and Jesus’ comeback: If I do not wash you, you have no share with me! , 13.8b.

d. Peter’s extravagance: Lord, not my feet only [then] but also my hands and my head! , 13.9a; and Jesus’ final word: The one who is bathed is clean and needs to wash only his feet, but not all of you are clean.

6. Not all of you are clean: What is the nature of Jesus’ understanding of his betrayer?, 13.11.

a. Jesus and his relationship with Judas

(1) Matt. 26.24-25 – “The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” [25] Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”
