The Gospe l of John
(2) John 6.70 – Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”
b. Jesus washes Judas’ feet as well (by implication).
B. Jesus applies the lesson for his true disciples, 13.12-20.
1. Jesus completed the task : He washed the feet of the disciples, put on his outer garments, and resumed his place at the table, 13.12.
2. A Lukan snapshot of the disciples’ attitude at the supper: Luke 22.24-27 – A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. [25] And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. [26] But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. [27] For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.”
3. You call me Teacher (Rabbi) and Lord, and you are right: That’s what I am, 13.13.
4. The logic of the Suffering Servant: If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet, 13.14.
5. Jesus’ example for the disciples (and for us), 13.13 ( Jesus is the pattern by which all believers should both aspire and one day will be conformed to).
