a. The “second commandment” is further expanded, refined, and clarified: Lev. 19.18 – You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
b. The New Commandment of love is to be mutual and communal (i.e., “one another”).
c. The New Commandment is to be a love patterned on the same quality and essence of the love that Jesus has demonstrated to us, 13.34b.
4. The evidence of authentic discipleship: By this do people know that we are followers of Christ, if you have love for one another , 13.35.
a. Gal. 5.13 – For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
b. 1 Thess. 3.12 – and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you.
c. Heb. 13.1 – Let brotherly love continue.
d. 1 Pet. 3.8 – Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.
e. 1 John 4.7-8 – Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. [8] Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
