The Gospe l of John
C. Jesus foretells Peter’s denial, 13.36-38.
1. Peter’s question and the Lord’s answer: “Lord, where are you going?” “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will later,” 13.36.
2. Peter’s comeback: Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you, 13.27.
3. Jesus’ sober prediction: “Truly, truly I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times,” 13.38.
III. I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, 14.1-14
John 14 begins and ends with the same word of consolation given by the Messiah to his disciples: “Let not your hearts be troubled” (cf. v. 1 and v. 27). Jesus here seeks to help his disciples know that the terrible tragedy of Calvary, its horrendous process, ugly reality, and terrible fallout, will actually result in the transformation of his disciples, the condemnation of the world, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the glorification of the Son of Man.
A. Jesus comforts the troubled hearts of the disciples, 14.1-4.
1. You need not be troubled now: You believe in God, believe also in me , 14.1.
a. The assurance is addressed to all the disciples , 14.1.
b. The audacious invitation of Jesus of Nazareth: You rely on God, now, rely on me.
