The Gospe l of John

(6) Col. 2.6 – Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.

(7) 1 John 2.6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

b. The parallel of correspondence and the transference of meaning via imagery.

(1) In the same way a branch derives life from dwelling in a vine, so my people derive life from me by dwelling in me.

(2) The correspondence transports the meaning (i.e., metaphor, “to carry along”).

5. The identity: I am the vine, you are the branches, 15.5.

a. Whoever abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, 15.5a.

b. The word translated variously as “abide” (cf. KJV, NASB, ESV, NRSV) or “remain” (cf. TEV, NIV) is a verb form of the idea of “place of dwelling,” or “home.” God promised his covenant people that he would dwell with them always if they remained faithful to his covenant stipulations (Exod. 25.8; 29.45; Lev. 26.11-12; Ezek. 37.27-28; 43.9).

c. The critical underlying principle of all spirituality in the NT: For apart from me you can do nothing.

B. Branches that wither, and branches that bear increasing fruit, 15.6-8
