1. For lack of abiding in Jesus, branches are thrown away and withered , 15.6.

2. These dead, lifeless branches are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned, 16.6b. (“Dead, fruitless branches of vines are obviously of no use for carpentry; their only possible value is for fuel,” Keener, IVP Bible Background Commentary , p. 301.)

3. If we abide in him , and his word abides in us , we may ask whatever we wish, and it will be done for us, 15.8.

4. The Father is glorified by much fruit bearing , and those who bear much fruit prove themselves to be Jesus’ disciples , 15.8.

a. Matt. 5.16 – In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

b. 1 Cor. 10.31 – So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

c. 1 Pet. 2.12 – Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evil doers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

C. Keeping the commandments of the Messiah: loving one another as he has loved us, 15.9-13

1. Jesus’ disciples are loved by him in the same way the Father has loved him. We are charged to remain (dwell, abide) in that love, 15.9.
