2. Obedience to his commandments is proof of abiding in his love, even as Jesus kept the Father’s commandments and abode in his love, 15.10.

3. These truths produce joy , 15.11.

4. Jesus repeats the new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you, 15.12.

5. No greater love exists than the laying down of one’s life on behalf of one’s friends, 15.13.

D. No longer servants, but his friends, 15.14-17.

1. Jesus reveals the intimacy of relationship that he has with his own: We are his friends .

2. Aristotle’s three kinds of friendships: ( Nicomachean Ethics )

a. Pleasure friends: There are those with whom we form friendships on the basis of the shared loves we have for certain pleasures, thrills, interests, and desires.

b. Utility friends: Those friendships maintained for the practical value and benefit that they bring the friends in our mutual self-interest, such as partners in business, co-workers, etc.

c. Character friends: There are those with whom we form friendships on sharing a self, that is, sharing the same fundamental traits and virtues in our pursuit of the good.
