1. Judas betrays our Lord to the authorities, 18.1-3.
a. Jesus’ departure: Did Jesus hide from those who sought him, or rather, did he actually go to them? , cf. 18.1.
b. Judas uses his intimate knowledge of the Lord’s habits to lay in wait for him, 18.2.
c. Judas leads the pack: He procures a band of soldiers, some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees , 18.3a.
d. Notice what they took along to take Jesus : lanterns, torches, and weapons , 18.3b.
2. Jesus, the Lord, presents himself to the officials at his arrest, 18.4-9.
a. His complete knowledge of the event: Jesus knowing all that would happen to him , 18.4.
b. His assertive demeanor: Jesus came forward and said, “Whom do you seek?” , 18.4.
c. The crowd’s answer, and Jesus’ “I am” assertion,” 18.5.
(1) The crowd sought “Jesus of Nazareth.”
(2) Jesus’ retort: “I am (he)” (cf. also verses 6, 8).
(3) Notice Judas’s place: Judas who betrayed him, was standing with them , 18.5.
