V. The Betrayal and Arrest of the Lamb of God, 18.1-40

Jesus of Nazareth, God’s only begotten Son and the true Messiah, now continues to make known to the world the Father’s name in his suffering and passion, even as he had done in his words and deeds throughout his earthly life and ministry (John 17.26). Now, through the fulfillment of his prophetic word, his Messiahship will be revealed in a troubling, painful, and tragic way. Judas, his own companion, will betray him (cf. 13.26), Peter, his chosen messenger, would deny him (13.38), and the rest of his disciples would be scattered, and he would be left alone (cf. 16.32). As mentioned in the other Gospels, this apparently tragic string of events lies at the center of the reason why Messiah had to suffer, as Jesus now will prove himself authoritatively to be (cf. Luke 24.25-26 – And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! [26] Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”).

A. The Lamb is handed over to the authorities, 18.1-11.
