The Gospe l of John

E. Jesus cares for his mother from the Cross, 19.25-27 ( the prominence of women at the scene of the Cross ).

Matt. 27.55-56 – There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, [56] among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. Mark 15.40-41 – There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. [41] When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. Luke 23.49 – And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

1. Women standing at the Cross: Mary, Jesus’ mother, Mary’s sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.

2. Jesus’ word to his mother: Woman, behold your son! , 19.26.

3. Jesus’ word to John: Behold, your mother! , 19.27.

4. John’s taking Mary, Jesus’ mother, into his own home, 19.27b

F. The Death of Jesus of Nazareth, 19.28-30

1. Jesus’ self-knowledge: Jesus knowing that all was now finished, says to fulfill Scripture , “I thirst,” 19.28.
