3. The woman’s skepticism: Are you greater than our father Jacob , 4.12.
a. He gave us this well and drank from it himself, he and his sons and his cattle.
b. Association with personage and place : holy people and holy places as religious credibility (the mindset of religious consciousness )
4. Water that ends thirst forever, a spring of water welling up to eternal life, 4.13-15
5. Down to brass tacks: “Give me this water.” “Go and get your husband.”
a. The woman’s reply: I have no husband, 4.17.
b. Jesus’ response: You are correct; you have no husband, but you’ve had five and the one you have now isn’t yours either! , 4.17-18.
6. Neither is this an effort to make Jesus palatable to the philosophers and religious inquirers of the day.
