a. Mount Gerizim, the Samaritans holy site equivalent to Judaism’s Jerusalem, was in full view of Jacob’s well.
b. Complete consciousness of racial separation and differing systems of worship would be replaced by God’s own true way of worship through the person of Messiah Jesus.
3. The hope of the Samaritan woman: 4.25 – The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”
4. Jesus’ reply: 4.26 – “I who speak to you am he.”
a. Undeniable (categorical) recognition of his identity as the Messiah
b. The “Eureka” moment of recognition; in conversion
E. Jesus reaps the Samaritans, 4.27-45
1. The disciples return and the testimony of the Samaritan woman to her neighbors ( oikos ), 4.27-30
2. Jesus’ food: 4.31-38
a. It was often the habit of ancient sages and teachers to use the analogy and metaphor of food for spiritual truth or the accomplishment of divine will. In the OT, we find this metaphor associated with the prophetic calling (Jer. 15.16; cf. Ezek. 2.1–3).
