a. He had been sick longer than many people lived in early history; he had been lying there two years less than Israel had wandered in the wilderness .
b. Testimonies of cures in the ancient world would often note how long the person had been ill to highlight the glory of the healer’s powers.
c. Notice how dramatically pathetic this figure is: Not only is he ill and disabled , but he is also ignored and overlooked . Both sickness and indifference.
4. Jesus’ command, the lame man’s obedience, and the miraculous result, 5.8-9a

B. Confrontation of the Jewish leaders with Jesus over the healed man, 5.10-18
1. The Jews’ rebuke to the healed man–the point of contention?: “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed,” 5.10.
2. Controversy over the man who ordered the healed man to carry his bed, 5.11-13
3. Jesus and the healed man’s encounter in the Temple, 5.14 – Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you. (A sense of sickness as a sign of judgment for committed sin?)
