4. The man’s identification of Jesus to the Jewish authorities, who persecuted Jesus because he was doing these things on the Sabbath , 5.15-16

a. Exod. 20.8 – “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

b. Jer. 17.21 – Thus says the Lord: Take care for the sake of your lives, and do not bear a burden on the Sabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem.

c. Jer. 17.27 – But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter by the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.

5. Healing on the Sabbath surely is within the will of God!

a. Mark 3.4 – And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.

b. Luke 13.14 – But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”

6. Jesus’ reply: “My Father is working until now, and I am working,” 5.17.

a. Jesus identifies his work with the direct intervention and working of the Father .
