The Gospe l of John
1. The empty-handedness and amazement of the officers (and their ironic response): “No one ever spoke like this man!”, 7.45-46.
2. The Pharisees’ elitism and snobbery: None of the authorities or the Pharisees have believed in him; but this ignorant-of-the-Word crowd is accursed , 7.47-49.
3. Nicodemus’s plea for objectivity, and the Pharisees’ ad hominem response about Galilee , 7.50-51
IV. Jesus and the Woman Caught in Adultery, John 8.1-11
A. The historicity and authority of John 8.1-11
This portion of Scripture [John 7.53-8.11] is omitted by the earliest manuscripts, this passage is generally agreed to be a later addition to the Fourth Gospel. Although it is considered by many scholars to be, in fact, a true story of Jesus’ relationship to the woman and her accusers, others suggest that this portion not be considered to be a part of the actual life context of Jesus that John addresses.
1. This portion, John 7.53-8.11, is not contained in many important Greek manuscripts of John.
2. Check Yarbrough’s comment: this portion is placed in various places, (i.e., after 7.36, after 7.44, or after 21.25), Yabrough, p. 87.
3. Many solid evangelical scholars are persuaded concerning the “canonical authority” of this portion to be less than convincing.
