1. Hebraic imagery: “I am the Light of the world,” John 8.12.

a. Repentance from evil : His followers do not walk in “darkness.”

b. Demonstration in holiness : His followers possess in him the very light of life.

2. The Pharisees claim Jesus’ testimony to be invalid (i.e., being from himself alone), 8.13 (i.e., two or more witnesses makes testimony valid, Deut. 19.15).

B. Jesus’ reply to the accusation of offering invalid testimony, 8.14-20

1. My testimony is true, even if I bear witness to myself for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don’t! , 8.14.

2. You judge according to the flesh, and the Father bears witness to who I am, 8-15-16.

3. Jesus’ two witnesses according to the Law: Jesus as the faithful witness and the Father as One offering confirming testimony , 8.17-18

4. The crowd’s ignorance of Jesus’ Father: Where is your Father, 8.19.

5. Jesus’ categorical reply: You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also (i.e., a testimonial to the intimacy between the Father and the Son).
