d. Gal. 3.7 – Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.

2. In Jewish belief of the time, physical descent from Abraham “ virtually guaranteed ” salvation, with the exception of only the most vile and wicked persons.

3. Jesus rejects their claim of being Abraham’s children.

a. You are not Abe’s kids, ‘cause you don’t do what Abraham did, 8.39b.

b. You seek to kill me, a man who told you the truth: You are not doing what Abraham did, you are doing what your father did , 8.40-41a.

4. The delusion: “We are not born of sexual immorality – we have one Father, even God, 8.41b.

5. Jesus’ definition of the Pharisees’ fatherhood, 8.42-47

a. God’s not your Father, if he were, you’d love me for I came from him and I’m here, 8.42.

b. You can’t understand what I say because you cannot bear my word , 8.43.

c. You are of your father, the devil! , 8.44.

(1) Your will is to do your father’s desires (i.e., murder the righteous).

(2) He was a murderer from the beginning.
