5. The claim to deity: Before Abraham was, I AM , John 8.58.

a. “I am” is a title of God, Exod. 3.14.

b. Jesus uses God’s own reference to himself at the revelation of Yahweh at the burning bush.

c. Understood as blasphemy : they take up stones to throw at him, 8.59.

(1) Lev. 24.16 – Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death. (2) John 10.33 – The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.”
