B. Laziness: A lazy spirit makes excuses for neglect, distraction, and an inability to engage the Word of God seriously.

1. Neglect of the practice of the Word of God, Heb. 5.11-14

2. Excuses and alibi-ridden walk; constantly giving false reasons for one’s neglect, James 1.22-25

3. Undisciplined habits and shallow understanding, 1 Tim. 4.7-9

4. Laziness aborts the power of the Word of God through neglect and distraction!

C. Selfishness: A selfish heart is preoccupied with petty, small things instead of the true treasure of the Word of God.

1. Preoccupation and romance with one’s own pleasures rather than the things of the Spirit, Col. 3.1-4

2. Pride and selfishness create the context for a worldly mind, Rom. 8.1-9

3. Failure to take up one’s cross and follow him in the way of suffering, servanthood, and sacrifice, Luke 14.26-33

4. Selfishness and pride kill all seeking of the Word of God in the heart!
