Appendix 5 Professor’s Guide

This appendix is aimed at those who are interested in preparing and teaching original courses for leaders in the urban church.* Much of the information in the front part of this Mentor’s Guide will be useful to you, however, as a professor you will create the course content as well as teach it. Qualifications Professors must fully support the vision of The Urban Ministry Institute . They must be in agreement with World Impact’s Affirmation of Faith Statement (see page 265). They must show expertise in the field(s) related to the courses they teach or the seminars they lead (normally an academic degree and/or ordination plus substantive ministry experience).** Job Description Professors are responsible for developing and teaching courses, tutoring students, and/or leading seminars and conferences that fulfill the goals and objectives of The Urban Ministry Institute . As you teach your course, your job responsibilities include:

* In the terminology used at The Urban Ministry Institute, a Mentor is someone who teaches a class where the core content is delivered by video or audio using TUMI’s published distance- education courses. In contrast to this, a Professor actually develops a new course for use at the local ministry site. ** The Site Coordinator will make the final determination of qualifications. The rule of thumb is that the Professor must have sufficient academic background and ministry experience to train pastors who are already engaged in the practice of ministry. Cross-cultural experience and urban ministry experience may also be factors considered in evaluating whether a person can be considered for this position.

Steps to Developing a Course

1. For your information and orientation, please take time to study Section I of this Mentor’s Manual to provide an overview of The Urban Ministry Institute , our curriculum, pedagogy, and pro- gramming. Please pay special attention to the role of the Great Tradition in TUMI’s across-the-curricula strategy (i.e., our Sacred Roots emphasis), especially the commitment to creedal theology informed by the historic Nicene Creed.
