Assigning, Recording, and Processing Student Grades

Your satellite and its training experiences exist to facilitate and equip leaders for the urban church. A formative and central element of that training is accurate and regular record keeping of student information and grading. Careful record keeping helps you know the status of each student, keeping current in their contact informa- tion, and following their progress academically and ministerially. You will need a solid, efficient system designed to track the student courses and grades. Keep your system simple, and design a structure easy enough for you to maintain and follow. These records must be confidential, not accessible to the public or left where others can see them. Establish a clear, doable process, and then follow it consistently. You are representing the Lord and your students in this, and excellence shows your respect for both. Again, a key part of the Mentor’s role is to record individual student assignment grades, calculate their overall grades, and inform the Site Coordinator of the students’ grades so transcripts can be created and students formally notified of their final grades. Although TUMI classes are not driven primarily by academic aims, we do take student performance seriously. And, of course, your students will anxiously await their transcripts at the end of each course . The following steps (and sample appendices) will help you process your students’ work and submit their records to your Site Coordinator promptly, appropriately, and accurately. Receive Completed Assignments Throughout or at the end of each course, you will receive assignments from your students. Ensure that these are put away and kept out of view of other students. Create a system that you can follow in which to receive the assignments and keep them confidential. (Recall our suggestion of the envelope method, which emphasizes student organi- zation of their own materials, to be turned in at the end of class). Grade Paperwork The course requirements and weights are already assigned for each Capstone or Foundations course. (Each Capstone module has a syllabus in the front of the student workbook, and each Foundations for Ministry Series course or workshop syllabus may be accessed by our site coordinators on our website, www.tumi.org on the Satellite

In some cases, these guidelines may not address specific situations in your context. It may be necessary to consult your ministry’s leaders for specific direction. While we want all TUMI sites to stay consistent with TUMI standards, you may be leadership. For example, in a jail or prison it may not be wise to allow fellow students to grade each other, and take-home finals may be impossible. more specific in the guidance from your
