Departmental Goals As mentioned earlier, The Urban Ministry Institute offers courses in four depart- ments of ministry education: Biblical Studies, Theology and Ethics, Christian Ministry, and Urban Mission. We believe that urban ministers need a working knowledge of all four disciplines. Therefore, our certificate and diploma programs are designed to give students a balanced exposure to each of these subject areas. Biblical Studies courses are designed to increase the student’s knowledge of Scripture and provide skills for studying, interpreting, and communicating the Word of God. Courses in Theology and Ethics are designed to help students understand “historic orthodoxy,” to integrate the themes of Scripture, and to apply those teachings to the world today. Christian Ministry courses emphasize training for becoming an effective leader and disciple-maker in the urban church, and provide “how-to” skills necessary for pastors, teachers, and church workers. Courses in Urban Mission help students understand missiological principles for church planting and development work in urban centers. The purpose and goals for each of these department areas can be found on the following pages. These goals are the standard by which The Urban Ministry Institute seeks to prepare leaders for effective ministry to and through the local church and in the urban communities they serve. Use the following pages to compare the description and key outcomes of your site developed courses with the purpose and goals of each of the departments to determine the number and departmental placement of your new course.
