Theology and Ethics
I. Cognitive Goals
The purpose of the Department of Theology and Ethics is to provide training in “historic orthodoxy” to help leaders within urban churches or missions integrate the themes of Scripture, and apply these teachings to the world today.
The learners demonstrate understanding:
A. O f the essential doctrines of Christian theology, with special emphasis on: 1. A theology of the Kingdom of God 2. A theology of the Church and its mission
3. A theology of the poor 4. A theology of the city B. Of the nature of divine revelation and its authority.
C. Of the nature, sources, scope, and methods of Christian theology. D. O f theological method that is centered in, and understood through, the person, teaching, and work of Jesus Christ. E. Of the biblical view of wisdom. F. Of the basic creeds of the Church. G. O f the broad outline of Church history including its expansion, doctrines, significant people, and significant movements. H. O f the commonalities and differences between Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christians. I. Of the major tenants of non-Christian religious systems. J. Of the major tenants of cults. K. O f how to evaluate the teachings of cults and non-Christian religions in light of Christian doctrine. L. O f the nature of truth and virtue and how they are discovered and understood. M. Of historical and modern approaches to Christian ethics. N. Of how to critically evaluate non-Christian approaches to ethics. O. O f the ethical dimensions of Christian ministry in personal and societal relationships.
II. Affective Goals
The learners demonstrate:
A. Love for God. B. A deep sense of personal worth, security, and calling which is founded on faith in Christ’s redemptive work. C. D ependence on the Holy Spirit as Counselor, Guide, and the key teacher of Truth.
