“Biblically speaking,” replied Father Greg, “a mystery is something hidden which is now being revealed.” “I get that,” said Joseph, “leaven is hidden when it’s mixed into the dough; only when it begins to rise do you know it’s there.” “But they couldn’t eat leaven,” said Preacher. “Maybe the Israelites were like leaven among the Egyptians,” I said. “ There’s your metaphor, Joseph!” said Cesar. “That’s a good insight, Ari” agreed Father Greg, “but what was it that was hidden and yet came to light through the exodus?” “God’s mighty arm and His outstretched hand!” declared Preacher. “That’s right,” agreed Joseph, “the salvation of God’s people became visible through the exodus.” “And the Egyptians were judged,” added Cesar. “Melito said the feast of unleavened bread was bitter,” I replied, “like the judgment on Egypt.” “Or on Israel at the exile,” added Joseph. “And especially on Jesus at the cross,” said Preacher. “Mentor, what do other witnesses beside Melito say about leaven?” asked Cesar. “The witnesses testify to the leaven of their own day,” explained Mentor, “the heresy of Marcion.” “What heresy is that?” asked Joseph. “May I answer this one, Mentor?” asked Father Greg. Mentor nodded.
