“Not in the way you’re thinking,” replied Father Greg, “but there were opposing parties or factions.” “Who?” asked Joseph and I, at the same time. “The Monarchists emphasized God’s oneness,” he explained. “Monarchy?” said Preacher, “that sounds like a king.” “Precisely,” said Father Greg, “God the Father is King—the One God.” “But Jesus and the Holy Spirit are fully God too,” said Joseph. “Of course,” the priest agreed, “and that point was emphasized by those who taught a view called the Economic Trinity .” Preacher wagged his head as if our talk was so much nonsense. “God is the great three-in-one,” he said, “what else do you need to know?” “One God, but three whats, Edward?” asked Father Greg. “Three whats ? Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that’s what. You’re a priest and you don’t know that?” “Edward,” said Father Greg patiently, “the Father is God, right? “Tell me something I don’t know!” said Preacher. “But the Son and the Holy Spirit also are God, right? “What’s your point, Rabbi?” The three of us rolled our eyes at Preacher, and Father Greg continued,
