The Ancient Witnesses

70 • The Ancient Witnesses: A Journey to Discover Our Sacred Roots

Overhearing our conversation, one of the witnesses saluted. 6 “Ignatius of Antioch,” announced Mentor. “He’s one of the Apostolic Fathers,” whispered Father Greg. 7 Ignatius was a small man with a humble manner. He had coppery-brown skin and a sparse, unkempt beard. His robe was emblazoned with a blood-red cross. He stood, and as he spoke, his voice rang like a trumpet. “Seeing the whole congregation of you in faith and love,” Ignatius began, “I exhort you to study to do all things in harmony with God, for as long as your bishop presides here in the place of God…” He held out his hand to Mentor. “and your presbyters in the place of the assembly of the apostles,” he indicated his fellow ancient witnesses, “along with you deacons who are most dear to me, being entrusted with the ministry of Jesus Christ.” With this last statement he indicated us pastors, and then was silent. “What’s the matter with the old dude?” asked Preacher. “Quiet, Preacher,” Joseph hushed, “he’s testifying.” “Those were his opening remarks, “whispered Father Greg, “he’s waiting for the moderator to ask the question.” 6 To be recognized to speak, an ancient witness would not raise his hand as is our modern custom, but would offer a modified Roman salute: touching his right hand to his chest, he would then extend his right arm.

7 The Apostolic Fathers were the first generation of Church leaders after the death of the twelve Apostles.
