I. The Definition of the Teaching Ministry

Video Segment 1 Outline

A. The teacher is a scribe of the Kingdom , Matt. 13.52 - And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

1. Didasko in the NT. Of the 97 occurrences of verbal form didasko in the NT, the vast majority (74) are cited in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The remaining instances are scattered through Paul’s letters, including the pastoral letters, as well Hebrews, 1 John, and Revelation. Didache , a noun form, is usually translated as “doctrine” (29 occurrences), and once as “that which has been taught” (1 occurrence).

2. Teaching ( didaskalia ), or the substance of what a teacher provides a learner, is variously translated as “doctrine,” e.g., 1 Thess. 1.10; “teaching,” Rom. 12.7; or, “learning,” Rom. 15.4.

3. The teacher is a scribe in that they do not utter fresh new revelations from the Lord (as an apostle or a prophet) but explain and apply Christian doctrine with the members of the local church (Acts 13.1; cf. Eph. 4.11).

B. The teacher is a master builder : a teacher relies on the truth given by other gifted members in the body (the apostles and the prophets).

1. The teacher builds on the teaching of the apostles and prophets, explaining and making its meaning clear, 1 Cor. 12.28-29; Rom. 12.7.
