The teaching ministry lies at the heart of making disciples in the NT, and seeks to fulfill directly Jesus’ mandate to instruct disciples that are baptized in him to obey all that he has commanded us (Matthew 28.18-20). With the other major offices of the Church, the teacher is charged with equipping the saints for the work of the ministry for the upbuilding of the body of Christ (Eph. 4.12). As an emerging leader, you inevitably will be in a position to teach others, and God’s will is that we learn to do so well enough to teach others to train others (2 Tim. 2.2). Having a full grasp of the teaching ministry as equipping the saints for the work of the ministry, and protecting them from the threat of heresy, schism, dead orthodoxy, and spiritual immaturity is essential for your own leadership development. Therefore, carefully review the material of this segment with attention to the questions below. 1. What are some of the terms used in the NT which revolve around the idea of teaching? How do these various terms relate to one another, i.e., how do they highlight the role of the teacher as an instructor and builder of others? 2. What are some of the models of the teaching ministry which may be inferred from the NT, and how do these models help us understand the purpose, scope, and responsibility of the teacher? How do these models help us understand the tools in which the teacher must know and become expert in to fulfill their ministry?
