Psalm 68.18. But whereas in the psalm the victor receives gifts from his people, Paul says, “When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people” (NRSV). These gifts are the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers given to the church “to equip the saints” (Eph. 4.11–12).

B. The cardinal virtue of preaching: Clarity
1. The teacher needs clarity to understand the intricate depth of the Word of God, 2 Tim. 2.15.
2. The teacher needs clarity in rightly dividing the Word of truth (showing the relationship between themes concealed in the OT and revealed in the NT).
