b. Believers, because of the Kingdom’s consummation, need not grieve as the lost do, who have no hope of God’s reign returning in power to the earth.

Though believers may physically die in this age, our hope is absolutely certain that in his own time and manner, the Lord will bring to pass the prophetic and apostolic promise to reign forever as King, in a new heaven and new earth where his justice and truth will endure unto the ages.

c. Paul instructs the Thessalonians in the truths of Jesus’ return, then suggests that they comfort each other with those words, 1 Thess. 4.18.

2. To encourage us to remain ever watchful, sober, and alert in light of the soon appearing of Jesus Christ

a. Jesus’ constant word to his disciples to watch and stay ready for his appearing, Luke 12.35-40

b. Paul suggests in Romans 13.11-12 that the time of the end approaches quickly, calling for sober readiness and alertness.

c. Further, Paul proclaimed to the Thessalonians, as children of the light that they ought to be sober, staying alert for his coming, 1 Thess. 5.6-9.

d. Peter tells the persecuted Christians of Asia Minor to be sober and rest their hope fully on the grace to come at Jesus’ revelation, 1 Pet. 1.13.

e. Peter reiterates the need to be sober and watchful since the end of all things is at hand, 1 Pet. 4.7.

f. The power of the word of prophecy to impact one’s discipleship, 2 Pet. 1.19
