B. Implications for our understanding of the OT’s witness to Christ and his Kingdom

1. Joshua as the Captain of the order of the Lord typifies the role of Jesus Christ as Commander-in-chief of the forces of God against the devil.

2. Through his death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus Christ has been raised to the point of victorious conqueror, who is leading the Church into greater levels of victory and conquest.

a. Gen. 3.15

b. Ps. 68.18

3

c. Isa. 53.12

d. Luke 10.18

e. Luke 11.22

f. Heb. 2.14

3. Christ’s ministry as our Commander is superior to Joshua’s warfare; as Joshua defeated the armies of the Amalekites (cf. Exod. 17.8-16), so the true Joshua will defeat the armies of the nations at his coming (Rev. 19), before he ushers in his reign of freedom and peace in a new heavens and earth.
