a ton of activity, while other churches, equally or even more godly, struggle just to stay afloat. Some ministries seem to get all kinds of attention and resources when they do not appear to be as biblical and faithful as others we know, which are functioning on the barest of budgets. Some of the students began to agree with this line of thinking. How would you’ve responded to this line of argument about God and his “playing favorites?”

Election

In our world, we use the word “election” to describe the process by which we choose our political leaders and to be “elected” means to be chosen by the voters for a special position of responsibility. Both the Old and New Testaments use this word when they speak about God’s people as being “elected.” How is the Scriptures use of the word “elect” like or unlike our modern use of this word?

Testimony

None of us are born as Christians. We have to be “born again” in order to receive the Kingdom of God. What did God use to convince you to become a Christian?

The Lord God, as a sovereign and authoritative God, has called and elected certain persons to certain ends and status. Above all else, God has elected Jesus of Nazareth to be his Elect, Suffering Servant. In his person, God has elected to bring about salvation to all humankind, to everyone who clings to him by faith in his death, burial and resurrection. God has also elected Israel to be the instrument through which he would bring Messiah into the world, and by which he would provide us with a clear picture of his salvation given to both Jew and Gentile in Jesus Christ.
