» Effective discipling of growing Christians is a centerpiece in the planting of healthy churches in urban settings. » The local church and the individual discipler work together to edify new converts, and help them grow to maturity in Christ. » As we model before new believers the Christian life, mentor them in the faith, and befriend them as brothers and sisters, we can see them grow to maturity. The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. As we observed together in this segment, the local assembly of believers is God’s means of following up and discipling new believers in Christ. As faithful, mature believers in the body take personal responsibility for the care of new converts in the church, we will then be able to be establish them in the faith–in doctrine, in spiritual growth, and personal witness. Make certain that you understand these foundational concepts, answering the questions thoughtfully and carefully. 1. What role does the local church play in the follow-up and discipleship of new and growing Christians? Is it possible, under normal circumstances, to come to full maturity in Christ without the ministry of other Christians in the body? Explain your answer. 2. From a biblical point of view, what are the essentials gifts and resources that God provides in the local church for the ongoing protection, feeding, and care of new believers? 3. According to Ephesians 4, what are those special individually gifted persons given to the body for the work of equipping the saints for the work of the ministry? Are these gifted people provided within every local church or to the Church in general ? Explain your answer. 4. Give an example from the Scriptures of a relationship where God connected his leaders with partners for the sake of upbuilding, training, friendship, and equipping for ministry. What principles of discipleship do we learn from this example?
