In this lesson we considered the concept of poverty through the lens of the concept shalom, or the wholeness of God’s covenant community. We saw that even though Israel proved unfaithful in keeping God’s covenant call to display his justice and righteousness, the image of shalom in the covenant was beautiful and true. God Almighty identifies with the poor in their plight, and asks his people to demonstrate that shalom in their dealings with one another as a light to the nations. In the person of Jesus Christ, the righteousness of God was fulfilled, and a new community was brought into being by the Holy Spirit. The Church, has now been called to fulfill the shalom anticipated in the OT, with Jesus as its founder and head.
