5. Lazarus is sleeping, but I must go wake him up , 11.11.

6. The disciples mistake Jesus’ comment about Lazarus as only resting, 11.12-13.

IV. I Am the Resurrection and the Life, 11.17-44

A. Martha’s faith in Messiah, 11.17-27

1. The background: when Jesus arrived, he found Lazarus to have already been in the tomb four days , 11.17.

a. Bethany only two miles from Jerusalem, 11.18a

b. Many of the Jews had come to mourn with Martha and Mary about Lazarus.

2. Martha heard of Jesus’ arrival, she goes to meet him (Mary stays behind in the house), 11.20.
