The Gospe l of John

1. Martha goes and calls Mary, and Mary’s quick response: The Teacher is here and is calling for you, 11.28-29.

2. Narrative details about the scene

a. Jesus remained where he was (he hadn’t yet come into the village), 11.30.

b. The Jewish mourners believe Mary was returning to the tomb “to weep there,” 11.31.

3. Mary’s response: Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died, 11.32.

a. Same response as Martha (without the connected statement of faith in Jesus)

b. Brokenness and grief can chip away at even the strongest faith.

4. Jesus’ sensitivity to Mary: deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled, 11.33

a. Lazarus’s death was not merely an academic show for the Lord, it broke his heart to see her weeping, and the others weeping with Mary.

(1) Term for “deeply moved” used only four times in the NT: Matt. 9.30; Mark 1.43; 14.5; John 11.38

(2) John 11.38 – Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
