The Gospe l of John

8. In that day when “I” return [ in the power and presence of the Spirit ], you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me and I in you, 14.20.

9. Those who have and keep Jesus’ commandments love him, and those who do, will be loved by both the Father and Jesus, and he will reveal himself to them, 14.21.

B. Judas expresses concerns about the notion of a hidden Messiah, 14.22-24.

1. A Messianic timetable all messed up: Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world? , 14.22.

2. Jesus’ answer: The one who loves me will keep my word and I will come to him and make my dwelling with him, 14.23.

a. A new definition of the dwelling place of God–not that God would dwell in the physical temple; now Jesus speaks of the presence of God dwelling with the disciple continually .

b. Seeing the individual believer and the community of disciples as the temple of God (cf. 1 Cor. 3.16-17 – Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? [17] If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple; see also 1 Cor. 6.19-20; Eph. 2.19-22.)

3. Don’t allow this to throw you: Whoever does not love me doesn’t keep my words, and this word isn’t mine, but my Father’s who sent me, 14.24.
