6. The great contradiction: But take heart, I have overcome the world , 16.33c.

a. Rom. 8.37 – No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

b. Gal. 1.4 – who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.

c. Gal. 6.14 – But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

d. 1 John 4.4 – Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

e. 1 John 5.4 – For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith.

IV. The Prayer of Our Intercessor: High Priestly Prayer of Jesus, 17.1-26

John 17 constitutes in my mind the true “Lord’s Prayer” in the Gospels. Unlike the model prayer Jesus gives in the synoptic Gospels, this petition in the presence of his disciples reveals the tenderness, intimacy, and determination of our Lord Jesus to glorify the Father, to experience union with the Father and his eleven, and the heart he has for those who will believe in the future.
