A. Jesus’ prayer to the Father on his own behalf, 17.1-5

1. The “hour has come”: Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 17.1.

2. Do this because you have given him authority over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom you have given him , 17.2.

3. The nature of eternal life: That they may know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent, 17.3.

a. 2 Cor. 4.6 – For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

b. Heb. 8.11-12 – “And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. [12] For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”

c. 1 John 5.11 – And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

d. 1 John 5.20 – And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

4. The completion of Messiah’s work: I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do , 17.4.
